An Exploration of Financial Shame and Poverty-Related Stress: Associations with Mental Health Outcomes in School-Aged Youth

Abstract

Our findings suggest that financial shame is associated with mental health outcomes, maladaptive coping styles, and multiple indicators of poverty-related stress. In addition, financial shame may be a valuable independent predictor of trauma-related symptomatology such as emotional numbing in response to economic strain.
