Psychological Representation of Money Depends on Both Quantity and Whether It Is Gained or Lost

Abstract

Participants reported feelings of excitement or pain if they were to receive differing monetary values one year in the future. Based on a factor analysis, people clearly temporally discount gains and losses differently, except when the values are in a moderate range.
