Abstract

We use a reappraisal manipulation to examine the role of emotional arousal in recall and recognition memory for words. Analyses indicate reappraisal reduced emotional arousal, but memory was often better for reappraised words, possibly due to cognitive effort at encoding. Furthermore, higher-arousing words possibly increased occurrences of false memory.
