The Effect of Approach and Avoidance on Self-Esteem

Abstract

Research has shown that associating objects with the self through approach or avoidance actions leads to more positive evaluations of the approached (vs. avoided) objects. The present study shows that self-associations may themselves change following approach or avoidance of valenced targets, as expressed by changes in self-esteem.
