Abstract

Research suggests that ambivalence plays a self-protective role when outcomes are uncertain. We conducted an exploratory study (N = 127) to investigate this hypothesis within a romantic context. Rejected participants held lower self-view and outcome ratings than accepted participants. Unexpectedly, we found that ambivalence did not protect against rejection.
