Finding the Meaning: Measuring the Salience of Religious Coping Words Following Disasters

Abstract

Historical research shows that people use religion to cope with disasters. We hypothesized this occurrence with modern epidemics. Utilizing a novel method, we measured the salience of religious coping words following the Spanish flu and the swine flu. Results revealed an increase in salience following the swine flu.
