Abstract
Rubik’s cube novices (N=79) were trained to solve cubes in a single session. Despite equivalent training, there was wide variability in skill acquisition. Only cognitive ability (not grit, mindset, or personality) predicted solution efficiency, and there was no evidence that cognitive ability’s role lessened with training.
