Abstract

We modified the item-method directed forgetting paradigm in which participants studied two unrelated items at a time. On some trials, participants were asked to remember one item and forget the other. Analyses revealed that simultaneously implementing separate cognitive mechanisms for remembering and forgetting is more challenging than individually deploying them.
