Abstract

We examined the association of effortlessly perfect self-presentation with mental health vulnerabilities in an experiment testing the effect of focusing on self-confidence (versus self-compassion or a neutral topic) on state self-compassion after an extremely difficult (versus slightly difficult) task. As hypothesized, high investment in appearing confident reduces self-compassion when challenged.
