Gender-Stereotypical Characteristics Strongly Emphasized in Gender-Targeted Toy Commercials

Abstract

Current study focuses on the gender-stereotypical messages in commercials. Ten toy commercials were coded according to the six gender-stereotypical characteristics. The results reveal that girl-targeted commercials emphasize the characteristics of beauty, fashion, and nurturance while boy-targeted commercials emphasize characteristics of power, speed, and competition.
