Perceivers’ Social Goals and the Type of Inferences Made

Abstract
People engage in spontaneous social inferences about others’ behavior. These inferences are made either about the actor or the situation. In two studies, we show that negative behaviors lead to trait inferences by individuals with active competition goals, and situational inferences by individuals with affiliation goals.
