Generative Learning Strategies That Promote Understanding of a Multimedia Lesson

Abstract

Students viewed a multimedia presentation on greenhouses gases. After each of four sections, they generated an explanation, viewed an explanation, or simply went on. Students who generated explanations performed better on a comprehension test than did students who viewed an explanation. The cognitive consequences of self-explanation are discussed.
