Abstract

We hypothesized that activating relational or collective self-identity increases prosocial behaviors more than does activating individual self-identity. Moreover, activating relational self-identity has a larger impact on prosocial behaviors than does activating collective self-identity. Results from two field experiments generally supported the hypotheses.
