Abstract

The effect of knowing the purpose of a study on personal space decreased interpersonal distance when using the stop-distance method. No gender effects or relationships between personality characteristics and interpersonal distance were found. Investigators of personal space should recognize that interpersonal distance is affected by knowledge of the study’s purpose.
