Abstract

Physical health status carries important information about an animal’s mate-value. We examined whether individuals who perceive themselves as less healthy engage in more mate retention in their romantic relationships, and whether this relationship is mediated by jealousy. Results confirmed this model for both cost-inflicting and benefit-provisioning mate retention.
