Your Suffering Is My Suffering: Self-Construal and Empathic Responding in Two Cultures

We examine cultural and individual differences in self-construal and empathic responding in the United States and China. Across three studies (total N = 915), Chinese reported feeling less empathic concern and more personal distress than Americans. Although cultural differences were not explained by interdependence, within-culture analyses revealed robust relationships.
