Abstract

Backward priming (e.g., baby-stork) can be explained either by strategic semantic matching or an automatic integration process. We found backward priming when primes were visible and fifty percent of nonwords are related to the prime (e.g., boy-girk), but no masked backward priming, consistent with an automatic, but conscious, integration process.
