Covert Retrieval Produces Greater Forward Testing Effects Than Overt Retrieval

Abstract

Metamemory judgments of learning following the study of a list of paired-associates facilitated the learning of a second list of paired-associates relative to cued-recall or restudy of the first list. The advantage of covert retrieval was limited to conditions where negative transfer (A-B, A-D) was absent.
