Abstract

People frequently use metaphors to communicate and reason about complex topics. We developed a method for mapping the structure of metaphorical lay theories, specifically metaphors for teaching. We identified four commonly endorsed metaphors and found that these metaphors bring to mind distinct, coherent clusters of teacher and student attributes.
