Adherence to Catholicism Predicts Parental Naming Practices

Abstract

Regional differences in the popularity of male first names for two areas of the United States were eliminated in 36 of the 50 years examined after controlling for Catholic male births. This calls into question prior explanations of regional naming differences focusing on the personality trait of independence.
