Systematic Distortion in Cognitive Maps: The Effect of Seismic Intensity

Abstract

The present study investigates the impact of seismic intensity on people’s cognitive maps. We found that when the actual airline distance is approximately equal, the subjective distance between two cities is shorter when two cities encountered earthquakes of nearer magnitude, even when the earthquakes they experienced were two independent events.
