Do Euphemisms Affect Quality Perception of a Used Car?

Abstract
Subjects were expected to rate a car’s quality higher if described as pre-owned than if advertised as used. Identical CarFax-style listings with “used” or “preowned” were created. No significant difference was found between used and preowned conditions. This might change with lower-information sources such as advertisements.
