Abstract

Why people label statements as hate speech? We investigated whether qualifying discourse as hateful is linked to ideological affinity, political orientation and perceived victimhood. In two studies (n = 2235) we found that mostly left-leaning subjects tend to perceive counter-attitudinal speech as hateful, specially when targeting groups perceived as victims.
