Abstract

Self-raters provided in-depth descriptions of thought processes underlying their relative and absolute self-ratings of work performance. Relative ratings engendered two steps – initial performance evaluation, then comparison to a reference group. Absolute ratings involved a single-step, less-inclusive process. These differences may help explain potential advantages of relative performance ratings.
