Children Learn New Words during Independent Reading: The Case of Learners of English As a Second Language

Abstract
The present study investigated the influences of exposure time, context and phonological structure on orthographic learning among children who are learning English as a second language (ESL). Results uncovered the important roles of context and phonological structure. Findings enrich reading theory and contribute to effective pedagogy for ESL learners.
