Abstract

200 participants experienced a fake online dating rejection to determine which kind of breakup (comparative or non-comparative) would cause differences in affect, memory for the rejector, and need for belonging. Participants in a committed relationship that experienced a non-comparative, harsh rejection remembered the most, but did not seek new relationships.
