Abstract

We investigated whether learning about linguistic diversity challenges the essentialist belief that category membership is absolute. After comparing contrasting categories from different languages, participants made fewer absolute membership judgments, relative to those merely exposed to the categories. Our findings suggest that cross-linguistic knowledge can promote more flexible conceptions of categories.
