Abstract

People are differentially sensitive to at least three factors when facing sacrificial moral dilemmas where causing harm maximizes overall outcomes: The action effect, contact effect, and intention effect.
Meta-analytic results of four studies show that people sensitive to each principle display both harm-rejection and outcome-maximization, a pattern suggesting moral maturity.
