Abstract
Establishing and maintaining close relationships requires self-disclosure. The current research showed that people who have benevolent intentions toward others (i.e., compassionate goals) self-disclose independent of trust because they want to be supportive of others, and that this self-disclosure builds trust in both the discloser and relationship partner.
