Participants Are More Surprised When Interactions with Others Are Civil Rather Than Uncivil

Abstract

Do people expect those with whom they interact to be civil or uncivil? Online participants (N = 237) rated their level of surprise in response to a series of civil and uncivil actions. Respondents were more surprised when confronted with civil actions possibly because they have encountered incivility so often.
