Deprivation and Threat in Childhood Uniquely Predict Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors

Abstract

This study examined how deprivation and threat in childhood affect subsequent development among college students. Sixty-eight undergraduates completed measures on risky behaviors, depression, and anxiety. Findings indicate main effects for gender and type of abuse on later internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Finally, parenting style affected number of adverse events experienced.
