Abstract

We developed and validated an experimental paradigm to study the effects of financial scarcity. Our paradigm–the household game–was successful in manipulating participants’ experience of financial scarcity, stress, and lack of control (n=150), offering new ways to investigate the causal effects of experiencing financial hardship in the laboratory.
