Abstract

This study found sexual words used by strangers are perceived as more offensive than those used by romantic partners or acquaintances. However, regardless of relationship type, women perceived sexual words, especially feminine ones, as being more offensive. This implies a bias in sexual language that is implicitly denigrating women.
