Target Identification: The Shape and Dominance of Adjacent Objects Matter

Abstract

Response time to identify target letters was fastest next to rectangular, slower next to curved, and slowest next to pointed filled shapes. This pattern is opposite to what we found in a previous experiment. Open shapes appear to direct attention toward, and filled shapes attract attention away from, targets.
