Emphasizing Test Instructions to Reduce Stereotype Threat

Abstract

We examined the reduction of stereotype threat by altering instructions for an intelligence test to clarify what the test aims to measure. Findings indicated that African Americans who received altered test instructions perceived lower levels of stereotype threat relative to the test than those who received the original test instructions.
