Abstract

Negative perceptions of pit bulls are pervasive and may deter adopters. Two experiments investigated the effects of breed labels on perceptions of shelter dog attractiveness. While Experiment 1 showed that dogs labeled “pit bulls” were rated less attractive than dogs labeled “mixed breeds,” Experiment 2 failed to replicate this finding.
