Abstract
Much is understood about morality and altruism, but little is known about the morality of altruism. While intuition suggests altruism is morally praiseworthy, we revealed that when people help those with the greatest need (disregarding social distance), altruism is rated less morally acceptable, predicting judgments of relationship quality and cooperation.
