Motivations for Cosplay and Female Empowerment: The Sexy Pikachu Effect?

We explored the relationship between empowerment and the perception of interpersonal power among female cosplayers. Selecting cosplay based on connection to characters or displaying one’s body had significant indirect effects on interpersonal power through perceived empowerment while in cosplay, but when motivated by appearing sexy, no such relationship was found.
