Abstract
• Past experiences with racial discrimination among African American students were associated with increased thought intrusions about a recent racist incident, intensifying negative psychological reactions to the event. Prior exposure to everyday racism may be a non-pathological form of trauma (Carter, 2007) that increases stress when these events again occur.
