Abstract

An observer's level of empathy may impact their deception detection abilities. Two separate groups of observers judged clips of mock-crime interviews or autobiographical interviews of liars or truth-tellers. Empathy positively predicted deception detection accuracy when observers rated autobiographical interviews, but not mock-crime interviews. Implications for investigative interviewing will be discussed.
