Abstract

Critics of the Stanford Prison Experiment have pointed to the orientation session as tacitly sanctioning cruelty. Across two studies, we found greater hostile and oppressive responses among guards exposed to an orientation session including the suggestive language in question compared to one in which only basic study information was provided.
