Emotion Regulation Strategies, Meaning-Making and Gender Affect Narrative Content in an Expressive Writing Paradigm

The effects of a standard vs. meaning-making expressive writing format on written emotional expression over time was assessed. Results indicate that writing instructions affected the writing content differently for men and women over time. The emotion coping strategy of emotional suppression moderated some of these results. Implications are discussed.
