Abstract

The present study explored the impact of negative stereotypes during reading. A negative stereotype (“men are poor readers”) was manipulated for male and female participants, who then completed reading and working memory tasks. Regardless of gender, the presence of the stereotype eliminated the correlation between working memory and reading performance.
