Abstract

What motivates students to achieve? Previous studies suggest that in individualistic (relative to collectivistic) societies, enjoyment, interest and self-efficacy are the answers. Using a large-scale sample consisting of half-million 15-year-old students from 66 societies, we found that greater collectivism weakens the link between enjoyment/interest/efficacy and achievement.
