Abstract
How do couples respond to disappointment? This study of married couples showed that partner’s disappointment elicited negative emotions. But those in satisfied relationships inferred more positive partner intentions, reported greater behavioral change, and over time experienced more positive feelings about the relationship. The findings support the motivational function of disappointment.
