Abstract

I propose that positive thinking about the future is positively associated with unethical behavior. Entrepreneurs of de novo going-public firms manage earnings in order to avoid for the (anticipated) lower performance by ex ante positive thinking about the future. This relation holds too for managers of S&P 500 in 1994-2010.
