Inferring Temporal Symptom Networks from Cross-Sectional Data: An Assessment of Conceptual Limitations

Abstract

In three separate longitudinal samples of individuals with varying degrees of depressive and anxiety symptoms, we found that most features of temporal networks cannot be reliably estimated based on cross-sectional networks constructed from the same data, thereby raising important questions for widely-used conventions in the interpretation of cross-sectional symptom networks.
