Abstract

This study was designed to explore two hypotheses (verbal mediation, depleted resources) explaining how external influence directing children's self-talk may decrease children's self-regulation while counting. Data collected from 63 preschoolers were more consistent with verbal mediation than depleted resources. Behaviors associated with speech changes contributed to lowered self-regulation.
