Abstract

Cognitive Energetics Theory (CET) posits that goal attainment is a function of oppositional driving and restraining forces. The present analysis examines common symptoms of burnout as manifestations of restraining forces, finding that the CET model can be successfully applied to burnout in various domains including helping professions, academia, and activism.
