Abstract

Controlling parenting impedes preschoolers’ autonomy on novel tasks. Stronger maternal endorsement of positive conditional regard (CR) to shape emotion expression and behavior predicts greater imitation on a simple task, for White dyads. Stronger positive plus negative CR predicts more imitation on a difficult block task, for White and Latinx dyads.
